Flying Drone on Mars

What is the circumstance we have to face to fly drones on mars?

  • Gravity also plays an important role while talking about drone flying or landing gravitational pull of mars is about 3m/s^2 and escape velocity is 5m/s^2 so with the intentions of taking off on mars surface we should keep in our mind that we don't have to cross the limit of 0.5 Gs'

  • To calculate the thrust required we add 120% excess of weight and then divide it with the number of motors for eg . if our drone weighs 1kg we will add 1.2kgs and if we are making Quadcopter then we have to divide the total of 2.2kgs by 4 that is 5.394 newtons of thrust(without any additional weights ).
  • But the above calculations are works on earth  Since the surface gravity of mars is 38% of the Earth's Gravity means if our drone weighs around 1kg on earth it will be only 380 grams on mars.
  • The calculation to fly the drone on mars if our drone weighs 1kg on earth-:

If a drone weighs 1 kg its weight is 380grams on mars using the same formula as above (2X380 grams) + 20% =914grams if making a quadcopter each propeller have to produce the thrust of 2.23Newtons

  • We should take note that if we have to fly a drone on Mars we should calculate thrust according to mars gravity because when our drone is on earth it weighs 1kg but on mars, it becomes 380 grams so on this basis our motor will not be able to generate enough thrust to make our drone hover on earth but its capable enough to fly our drone on mars.
  • The above calculation is not enough to fly a drone on Mars, Main problem while flying a drone created by the mars environment since there are fewer molecules in mars atmosphere it's really hard to create a lift solution of that is we have to make our propellers big and increase the RPM of the motor since there is really less air on mars as compared to earth
  •  Since there is only 1% air on mars as compared to earth that means motors have to generate twice RPM on earth. To compensate for that our drone has to more lighter.
  •  Weather is also the enemy of drones on the mars Speed of wind varies from 16Kmph to 113Kmph. And the temperature is also extreme it can freeze normal computers in a few days it has a temperature Lowest at minus 125 degrees Celsius to highest at 20 degrees Celsius at the equator.
